Exhibition Opens – Thursday, June 7, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm – Curwood Castle
Helping to Roll Out the Red Carpet, the Owosso Historical Commission will present a mini Curwood Film Festival at the Castle, featuring the films and film memorabilia of James Oliver Curwood. Many don’t know that as well as a world famous author and conservationist, Curwood was an American Movie Pioneer, with over 236 movies based on his novels, short stories, serializations and movie scripts. The following movies will be shown in the lower level of Curwood Castle continuously on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Curwood Festival.
1919 “Back to God’s Country,” produced by Curwood and Shipman – from Curwood’s short story “Wapi the Walrus”
1920 “Nomads of the North,” starring Lon Chaney – from Curwood’s novel of the same name
1934 “The Trail Beyond,” starring John Wayne – based on Curwood’s novel “The Wolf Hunters"
1935 “Skull & Crown,” starring Rin Tin Tin – based on a scenario by Curwood
1945 “Northwest Trail,” based a short story by Curwood
1988 “The Bear,” from Curwood’s novel “The Grizzly King”
We will also feature a collection of Curwood movie memorabilia shown along with the moves. This will include original movie posters, movie scripts, photo and photo stills, lobby cards and correspondence between Curwood and the movie stars from the golden age of silent cinema.
